Racist Britain
Approximately 30,000 immigrants and asylum seekers are locked up in detention centres and prisons in Britain every year, including over 2000 children and babies. About 1200 are deported from Britain every week; 63,000 in 2007. Since 2001 alone, as racist immigration legislation has got increasingly vicious, there have been 41 suicides of asylum seekers, refugees and migrant workers - 17 in detention centres and prisons. In September 2006 the Institute of Race Relations, catalogued the deaths of 221 asylum seekers, refugees and migrant workers in Britain in the 17 years since 1989. See Roll call of deaths of asylum seekers and undocumented migrants, 1989-2006 in racist Britain.
Some say Britain is not a racist state, but facts are stubborn little things and have to be reckoned with, whether we like it or not.
RACIST BRITAIN: THE FACTS... coming soon...
What is NWASDG?
A new organisation, the North West Asylum Seekers Defence Group (NWASDG), has been formed! It was initially set up in May 2006, by the anti-deportation campaigns: Defend Kalombo Campaign, Defend Eucharia & Timeyi Campaign, Defend Abdullah Gawaan & Family Campaign, United Community Association of Libyan Refugees and Manchester Revolutionary Communist Group (RCG), whose newspaper is Fight Racism! Fight Imperialism! (FRFI). NWASDG is an anti-racist organisation set up to support all asylum seekers, refugees and immigrants and their families, and other victims of racism, through consistent campaign work and protest. We encourage unity between asylum campaigns, as well as between asylum seekers and local communities, for joint action against Labour’s racist immigration laws.
- The North West Asylum Seekers Defence Group (NWASDG) is an anti-racist organisation. It is a coalition of asylum seekers and refugees defence campaigns and their supporters, which will campaign actively against any and all forms of racism and fascism.
- NWASDG will actively defend and support any and all asylum seekers and refugees and their families, who are under the threat of detention, destitution or deportation from Britain, within the north west area of England. NWASDG will also assist and work with asylum seekers defence campaigns in other parts of Britain.
- NWASDG will aim to set up and support as many (individual or collective) defence campaigns as possible, for asylum seekers and refugees, and will actively seek to encourage them to campaign together on a regular basis.
- NWASDG will seek to promote positive images of asylum seekers and refugees and their families and communities, and challenge the image that is portrayed in the mainstream media. NWASDG will also encourage and build links between these vulnerable communities and the indigenous British population.
All asylum seekers and refugees, other anti-deportation campaigns and individuals are invited to take part in the activities organised (see Events) to protest against the racist treatment of asylum seekers and refugees by this Labour government.
